According to the EPA, the most significant sources of formaldehyde in homes are likely to be pressed wood products made using adhesives that contain urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins. Formaldehyde has been shown to cause cancer in animals and may cause cancer in humans. Flame retardants are often applied to home furnishings, such as foam, upholstery, mattresses, carpets, curtains, and fabric blinds. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences states, “Although flame retardants can offer benefits when they are added to some products, a growing body of evidence shows that many of these chemicals are associated with adverse health effects in animals and humans, including endocrine and thyroid disruption, impacts to the immune system, reproductive toxicity, cancer, and adverse effects on fetal and child development and neurologic function.”
Wool is a natural, chemical free, and pesticide free flame retardant that approved by the EPA. The beauty behind wool is it is naturally flame resistant because its naturally high nitrogen and water content. Therefore, wool needs more oxygen/airflow or extremely flammable materials in the surrounding area for it to burn. The wool used by The Futon Shop is not treated with chemicals or harmful pesticides.
